INTRODUCTION
As we explained last year, it has always been our custom to base our estimate of the city’s population on the official figures of the last decennial census, adding to these the natural growth of the city. The present year is very exceptional and a difficult one in which to apply the usual method of computation based on normal conditions on account of the war. So many of our people are temporarily absent on the European Continent, and others are showing a tendency to change. In some cases we have included the names of those with our forces abroad, but to include all was impossible.
On the above basis Toronto at the close of 1915 had a
POPULATION OF 544,456
Toronto contains 1,740 streets and 100,825 buildings of all kinds, as shown by the Street Guide. Of these 6,465 are shown ■ vacant as compared with 6,342 last year. These figures include houses and buildings in course of construction.

SUBURBAN STREET GUIDE
We are having so many requests asking for the location of suburban streets that we have decided to include, as an added service to our subscribers, a list of such streets, which will be found on pages 17 to 21. This list is not as complete as we would have wished it to be, but we know that our patrons will appreciate our difficulties with a new departure such as this and the fact that it was added at practically the last moment, after our canvass of the suburbs had been finished.

There are 661..93 miles of streets and lanes, 540.70 miles of sewers, 577.701 miles of water mains, and 6,403 hydrants. The average quantity of water pumped in 24 hours during 1915 was 48,130,000 gallons.
